Order Flow
Part of Dropshipping shipping and delivery
Explaining multiple parcels in a single customer order
Explain split shipments clearly so a customer can see which items are in each parcel and when the rest may arrive.
One order can arrive in two or three parcels when different suppliers fulfil its items. Tell the customer that parcels will arrive separately, then identify the items and tracking reference in each parcel update so a partial delivery is not mistaken for a missing item.
Say it before the first parcel arrives
Where possible, flag a likely split before purchase and give each item its own delivery estimate. After checkout, map every line item and quantity to a parcel.
Order confirmation wording: Your order is being sent in separate parcels. Parcel [parcel label] contains [items]; parcel [parcel label] contains [items]. We’ll send a separate tracking update for each parcel when it ships.
Send a notification when each parcel leaves its supplier, rather than saying the whole order has shipped when only some items have left. First-parcel wording: Parcel [parcel label], containing [items], has shipped. Track this parcel here: [tracking link]. The remaining items are in a separate parcel; we’ll send its tracking details when it ships.
For the next parcel, name its items and provide its own tracking reference. Wording: Parcel [parcel label], containing [items], has shipped separately. Track this parcel here: [tracking link].
Keep the fulfilment reference, line items, quantity and tracking number together for every parcel. In the order view, group each parcel’s items and show its status and tracking reference, while making the remaining items easy to identify.
In a Shopify store, check the individual-fulfilment workflow with a test order split across suppliers. Confirm that each parcel’s items and tracking reference match, that separate parcel notifications are sent, and that the customer can reach every tracking reference from the order view.
Reconcile the whole order
When one parcel is delivered, leave the remaining line items visibly open in the order view. Support staff need the same parcel map so they do not mark the whole order complete or ask the buyer to repeat the details.
If a supplier changes a dispatch date, update only the affected parcel’s estimate and tell the customer what remains on track.
Close the order only after every item is delivered or otherwise resolved. Closing message wording: The final parcel, containing [items], has been delivered. Your order is now complete.
