Supplier Finding
Part of Dropshipping product selection
Avoiding products with unclear specifications: range test
Identify decisive specification gaps, resolve conflicting variants and know when to leave an unclear dropshipping product off the shortlist.
Use a three-way range decision: shortlist, hold for confirmation or set aside. Do not shortlist while the supplied version or a decisive detail affecting what buyers receive or a product claim remains contradictory or unsubstantiated.
Find the consequential gap
Create a SKU decision record with the supplier SKU and variant, the stated specification, the conflicting or missing detail, its effect on a buyer's decision, the supplier's answer, supporting evidence and the range decision. Check dimensions, material, finish, package contents and use conditions against the catalogue entry.
Mark a gap decisive if it changes the product or version supplied, what the buyer receives, a claim the buyer may rely on, or whether a mandatory safety standard or ban may apply. Treat it as useful but not decisive only when none of those outcomes changes; leave irrelevant details out of the decision.
Check what each measurement describes: an outside dimension, for example, may not show the usable space inside. An image showing an accessory does not establish that it is included.
Claims needing support can concern the nature or extent of ingredients, components, additives or allergens; the origin of ingredients or components; environmental impacts, emissions or efficiency; and health benefits or impacts. The ACCC can require businesses to back up claims about their products.
Key regulatory requirements for product claims in Australia
- ACCC authority to require substantiationYes – businesses must back up claims about ingredients, environmental impact, health benefits, and origin.
- Mandatory safety standards apply toCertain products including toys, electrical items, and children’s clothing.
- Required evidence for safety complianceThird-party certification or test reports from accredited laboratories.
Resolve conflicting versions
If the supplier's title, images, specification sheet or package information disagree, hold the product and ask: “For supplier SKU [SKU] and variant [variant], which version will a normal customer order receive? Please confirm [conflicting detail] in writing and provide evidence for that exact version.” Do not fill the gap with details from a similar item.
For example, if a product-page claim and the supplier's written answer conflict about a component or ingredient, do not shortlist it. Ask which exact version the order will contain and request evidence that supports the claim; if the answer and evidence do not resolve the contradiction, set the product aside.
A sample of the exact variant can help check observable dimensions, finish and contents. Record which version arrived, but do not treat a pre-production sample alone as sufficient safety testing where a mandatory standard applies; further quality assurance may be needed.
For safety compliance, ask for written evidence through third-party product certification or product testing, including copies of test reports, preferably from accredited test bodies or laboratories. A certification agency can provide written certification of compliance with safety standards; reliable, preferably accredited, independent laboratories can provide test reports.
Decide whether the item belongs in the range
Shortlist the product only when the exact supplied version is identified and its decisive details are consistently supported. Hold it when a specific supplier answer or matching evidence could close the gap; set it aside when the version remains unidentified, the contradiction persists or the needed substantiation is unavailable.
If a mandatory safety standard or ban may apply, check that product testing and any further quality assurance required for that case are in place before shortlisting. A sample check of visible details does not settle that question.
Keep the SKU decision record with the product. Reopen the decision if the supplier changes the material, components or version.
